The Importance of Sunglasses
UV rays increase risks for a number of vision disorders and diseases including macular degeneration, cataracts, and conjunctival cancers. Even on hazy or overcast days, UV rays can enter the eye and cause long-term damage. This is why, particularly in bright and sunny places like San Diego, you wear sunglasses at all times when outdoors during the day.
Choosing the Right Sunglasses
There are a number of sunglasses on the market, but not all of them can protect your eyes against UV rays. In fact, some of them may make matters worse. When you put on sunglasses, your eyes dilate to adjust to the darkness. When you are not wearing full UV protective sunglasses, this dilation allows for additional exposure and can increase risks for many eye disorders.
When choosing sunglasses, it’s best to go with trusted and reputable brands that offer full UV protection. While these may be a bit more expensive up front, they can significantly reduce UV damage and help protect the long-term health of your eyes.
