El Centro Retinal Detachment Treatment
Retinal detachment is a special area of focus at California Retina Associates. Treating a detached retina requires the skill and experience of a highly trained specialist. We offer the complete repair and healing of retinal detachment at each of our three offices. If you need retinal detachment treatment in El Centro or the surrounding areas you don’t want to trust your care to anyone but the best.
Comprehensive Treatment Options
Retinal detachment occurs when the light-sensitive tissue that lines the back wall of the eye peels away from its normal position. When this happens, the cells start to die off. If enough retinal cells die, the affected eye can sustain severe vision loss or even blindness. Therefore, it is critical to repair retinal detachment right away to preserve your eyesight.
The first way that we can treat retinal detachment is with a procedure called pneumatic retinopexy. During the procedure, we inject a gas bubble into the eye. The bubble floats through the eye to the retina and gently pushes it back into its normal position along the back wall of the eye. Then, we use a freezing device or laser to seal the retina to the back wall to prevent it from detaching again. The gas bubble eventually dissolves and is replaced with the eye’s own natural fluid. Pneumatic retinopexy can usually be performed in our office, as opposed to a hospital or surgery center.
The second way we can treat retinal detachment in El Centro is through a surgery called scleral buckling. During the scleral buckle procedure, a tiny silicone band or buckle is placed around the outside of the eyeball, creating a slight indentation to move the back wall of the eye closer to the retina. A freezing probe is used to seal the retina into the proper position. The band remains permanently in place, unless there is a rare complication. Unlike pneumatic retinopexy, scleral buckling is performed in a hospital or surgery center setting.
Another treatment for retinal detachment is vitrectomy surgery, also performed in an operating room. During vitrectomy, the vitreous gel is removed from the eye cavity to allow better access to the retina. Any scar tissue, blood or other debris can be removed at this time. A laser is used to seal the retina against the back wall of the eye. Finally, the vitreous is replaced with saline, gas or silicone oil to keep the retina in position as it heals.
As long as surgery is performed by a qualified retinal specialist, complications are rare. Our team has a track record of excellent outcomes in the treatment of retinal detachment and other similar disorders.
