What are Multifocal Lenses?
Multifocal IOLs have focal zones, or rings, that allow you to see clearly at both near and far distances. While these IOLs may not completely remove your need for glasses at all times (such as extended periods reading), they will dramatically reduce the need. Some studies have shown that multifocal lenses provide better near vision than accommodating IOLs, but they are also more likely to cause glare or mildly blurred distance vision as a tradeoff.
California Retina Associates offers premium multifocal lenses in San Diego and the surrounding areas. If you are interested in learning more, please call us at 619-425-7755 or 760-352-7755 to schedule an appointment.
Who is a Good Candidate for Multifocal IOLs?
If you are either nearsighted or farsighted, multifocal lenses can change your life. You’ve been used to wearing eyeglasses or contact lenses to correct the refractive errors in your vision. With multifocal IOLs, those will be a thing of the past.
In contrast, if you opt for monovision IOLs, you will still need to correct your vision at the distance you don’t correct, near or far, with glasses or contacts.
