Omega-3 Supplements and Eye Health
It has long been believed that omega-3 supplements are good for eye health. Some studies have even suggested adding omega-3s to your diet can reduce risks for macular degeneration and other serious vision disorders. However, new research from the National Eye Institute, a part of the National Institutes of Health, has found no evidence to support the claim that omage-3s are effective in preventing AMD or slowing its progression.
Omega-3s can be found naturally in fish and various marine and land plants, and have been linked to cardiovascular and neurological health. These benefits however have been primarily observable in patients who eat foods rich in this nutrient. Similar results have not been found in those who simply take supplements. This suggests that it is the consumption of nutrient-dense foods that help delay the onset of vision disorders and not simply the addition of nutrients through supplementation.
