La Mesa Ocular Melanoma Treatment
Treating ocular melanoma, a type of cancer that occurs in the pigment-producing cells of the eyes, is a highly individualized process. The recommended treatment or combination of treatments is based on the location and size of the cancer, in addition to the patient’s overall health and other factors.
No matter what stage the cancer is, our La Mesa ocular melanoma treatment team will work with you to determine the best course of action to preserve your vision and overall health. We will help educate and guide you to make the best decisions about your care. When evaluating your treatment options, we will discuss how these treatments may affect your vision, and what we can do to help you cope with any vision loss.
Radiation is a standard therapy for ocular melanoma, particularly small to medium size melanomas. Our ophthalmologists direct high-powered energy beams to kill the cancer cells. We can use external beam radiation or teletherapy, which comes from a machine and is directed into your eye. Or, we can deliver radiation by placing a special “plaque” containing radioactive seeds directly onto the tumor. This is known as brachytherapy. The plaque is similar to a bottle cap and stitched on the eye, where it stays for about four to five days before being removed.
Another common treatment for ocular melanoma is surgery to remove part of the eye affected by the tumor or, in certain cases, the entire eye. Depending on the size and location of the melanoma, we may surgically remove the tumor and a small amount of healthy tissue surrounding the tissue. If the tumor is particularly large, we may need to remove the entire eye (a procedure known as enucleation). In the case of enucleation, we can place an artificial eye to match the other eye.
Other Types of Cancer Treatment
Other less common types of ocular melanoma treatment include laser therapy or cryotherapy (extreme cold) to destroy melanoma cells. Our team of doctors is constantly staying up to date on new treatments and tests in order to offer our patients the safest and most effective methods.
