Anti-VEGF in Diabetic Retinopathy and Macular Degeneration Treatment

Proudly Serving San Diego, Chula Vista, El Centro & Nearby Areas of California

Laser therapy has long been a standard in treating diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration and macular edema. For the right patients, anti-VEGF treatment can also be effective in improving visual acuity and preventing further vision loss from conditions commonly associated with diabetes.

The accomplished eye doctors at California Retina Associates offer a number of treatment options for retina-related vision conditions based on your individual needs. If you would like to schedule a vision exam, please call our El Centro office at 760-352-7755 or our Chula Vista practice at 619-425-7755.

Anti-VEGF stands for anti-vascular endothelial growth factor. It is administered to the eye via a tiny injection, and it is designed to block the growth of the protein that triggers the formation of abnormal blood vessels under the retina; these blood vessels can seep blood and fluid, and progressively contribute to vision loss.

Anti-VEGF injections may be used independently or in conjunction with laser treatment, depending on your unique circumstances. The findings of one study from the Diabetic Retinopathy Clinical Research Network indicated that patients who received anti-VEGF therapy along with timely laser treatment had greater vision improvement after one year than patients who underwent only laser treatment. Additional research has pointed to the effectiveness of anti-VEGFs in improving the rate of successful recovery from macular edema caused by diabetic retinopathy and treating “wet” age-related macular degeneration.

Your retina specialist will discuss your treatment options with you during your personal appointment.
