Retinal Detachment Treatment

Proudly Serving San Diego, Chula Vista, El Centro & Nearby Areas of California

The retina is the structure at the back of the eye responsible for changing light images into electrical impulses that are then transmitted to the brain via the optic nerve. Retinal detachment won't let the retina perform this function and, if left untreated, can lead to an irreversible loss of vision.

Symptoms of retinal detachment may include floaters and flashers, blurred vision, shadows in the peripheral vision, and a sudden loss of eye sight. If you experience any of these symptoms please call 619-425-7755 or 760-352-7755 to speak to the retina care experts at California Retina Associates as soon as possible. Many of the symptoms of retinal detachment constitute an emergency and will require prompt treatment to help guard against a complete loss of vision.

Treating Retinal Detachment

The experienced eye doctors at California Retina Associates use state-of-the-art diagnostic tools to detect retinal detachment. If you are suffering from this disorder, we will begin planning the treatment option most suited to meet your needs. Early detection is key. If we detect a possible detachment before it occurs, we can often use a laser to seal tears or holes and prevent future issues.

In many cases, retinal detachment can be repaired, ensuring no long-term interruption of vision. However, if issues such as macula damage have occurred due to the detachment, complete vision may be impossible to restore. This will be discussed with you prior to beginning any treatment.

Treatment options for retinal detachment include:

  • Pneumatic retinopexy – The placement of a gas bubble in the eye to push the retina back into its proper location
  • Scleral buckle – To push the eye wall against the retina
  • Vitrectomy – To remove the vitreous gel or scar tissue causing the detachment

Most of these procedures do not require an overnight stay in the hospital but may necessitate some restrictions on activities for a short period of time. Our experienced eye doctors will work closely with you before, during, and after your treatment to help ensure your absolute comfort and safety.

If you are suffering any of the symptoms of retinal detachment and are in the San Diego area, please contact California Retina Associates to schedule a comprehensive eye examination today.
