If macular degeneration is detected, we will work closely with you to determine the most appropriate course of action.

Treating Dry Macular Degeneration

There is currently not an FDA approved treatment for the dry form of age-related macular degeneration. However, lifestyle changes can be very effective at slowing its progression and preventing complete vision loss.

Our doctors have found that eating foods and taking supplements rich in nutrients such as vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc, lutein, zeaxanthin, and omega-3 fatty acids can help slow the progression of dry macular degeneration. So too can quitting smoking, losing weight, and participating in at least two hours of moderate exercise every week. We will be happy to work on an individual plan with you to help slow the progression of your disorder.

Treating Wet Macular Degeneration

When age-related macular degeneration progresses, abnormal blood vessels will begin to grow underneath your retina. These blood vessels will leak, damaging the light-sensitive cells in your retina and resulting in a loss of central vision. Caught early, we can often seal these vessels and prevent leakage with laser therapy.

When laser therapy is not an option or when additional treatment is required, we will use intravitreal injections. Medications that can be injected into the vitreous cavity include:

  • Avastin – an angiogenesis inhibitor that slows the growth of new blood vessels
  • Lucentis – an anti-angiogenic that inhibits vascular growth
  • Triesence – a steroid that prevents the release of substances that can cause inflammation

These medications may be used alone or in conjunction based on your particular needs. Our experienced eye doctors will discuss all of your options with you during your macular degeneration consultation.
