Lattice Degeneration

Proudly Serving San Diego, Chula Vista, El Centro & Nearby Areas of California

Lattice degeneration is an eye disease that effects nearly one out of every ten people. In some cases this degeneration of the peripheral retina is not a cause for concern. However, it is a risk factor for retinal detachment – seen in approximately 30 percent of all detachment cases.

If you are noticing an increase in floaters and flashers, please contact California Retina Associates online or by calling our El Centro office at (760) 352-7755 or our Chula Vista office at (619) 425-7755 to schedule a comprehensive examination today.

Symptoms and Treatment

Lattice degeneration is typically asymptomatic. The disease is most often diagnosed during routine eye examinations when tears and holes in the peripheral retina are noticed by your optometrist. If your eye doctor believes there is cause for alarm, he or she may refer you to one of our San Diego retina specialists for further examination.

When symptoms do occur, it is likely that the retina has already detached. This may include:

  • An increase in floaters and flashers
  • Sudden vision loss
  • A curtain or shadow that seems to begin at the side or top of the eye

It is best to treat lattice degeneration before symptoms of retinal detachment occur.

Treating lattice degeneration in most cases is unnecessary. However, in patients with severe myopia or those at increased risk for retinal detachment, our eye surgeons may recommend a simple laser treatment to seal associated holes. This is something that can be discussed with you in greater detail during your retinal examination at one of our Southern California locations.

If retinal detachment has occurred, our eye doctors will discuss treatment options such as pneumatic retinopexy, scleral buckle, and vitrectomy that can be used to replace the retina and prevent long-term vision loss.
