Symptoms of Glaucoma

Proudly Serving San Diego, Chula Vista, El Centro & Nearby Areas of California

Glaucoma refers to a series of eye conditions that cause damage to the optic nerve. Damage to this nerve often results in intraocular pressure, or an increase of pressure in the eye. The symptoms of glaucoma you experience will be dependent on the type of glaucoma you have and how quickly it is detected. The eye doctors at California Retina Associates can perform special tests during your regularly scheduled visits to detect early signs of glaucoma and help prevent or delay vision disruptions.

Glaucoma Symptoms

Open-angle glaucoma is usually asymptomatic until it is too late. This type of glaucoma is best detected during routine eye examinations. We will be happy to discuss diagnostic methods with you, particularly if you have glaucoma risk factors such as a family history of the disease.

When left undetected, symptoms of open-angle glaucoma may include a gradual loss of peripheral vision, also known as “tunnel vision.”

Symptoms of angle-closure glaucoma include:

  • Sudden eye pain
  • Red or swollen eyes
  • Cloudy vision
  • Rainbows or halos around lights
  • Nausea and vomiting

Angle-closure glaucoma is a medical emergency. If you suffer any of these symptoms, please call our San Diego office at 619-425-7755 or our El Centro office at 760-352-7755 immediately.

Symptoms of congenital glaucoma include:

  • Cloudiness in the eye
  • Red eyes
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Enlargement of one or both eyes

Congenital glaucoma may not be noticeable until your child is two to four months old.

Glaucoma Treatment

Glaucoma treatment may include eye drops, laser therapy, or eye surgery. The treatment best for you will depend on the type of glaucoma you have and the extent of damage that has already occurred.
